Motorcycle Safety

Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating adventure and also a convenient way to get around. Whether you ride your motorcycle only on special occasions or on a daily basis, one thing is for certain—you should always take the necessary precautions to ensure that you and your passengers stay safe.

Obtain your CT endorsement – Like many states, Connecticut requires you to obtain a motorcycle endorsement from the Department of Motor Vehicles before you can ride on public roads. You should always complete all necessary requirements before heading out on your motorcycle.

Take a safety course – Safety courses can be extremely helpful for all types of motorcycle riders. New riders can learn how to handle tricky and potentially dangerous situations, and more experienced riders can receive a refresher course.

Wear proper gear – You and your passengers should always wear approved safety helmets as well as protective clothing, adequate footwear, gloves, and more to reduce the risk of injuries in the event of a collision.

Never ride under the influence – Riding a motorcycle under the influence of drugs or alcohol is extremely dangerous and against the law. While riding to bars may be part of motorcycle culture, always ensure that anyone operating a motorcycle is sober.

Follow all traffic laws – Motorcyclists are held to the same traffic laws and regulations as any other type of vehicle. Though it may be tempting to maneuver your bike in different ways to beat traffic, make sure you are not violating any laws and putting yourself in danger.

Have adequate insurance – As with any type of vehicle, motorcycle accidents will happen. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 88,000 motorcyclists were injured and nearly 5,000 died in crashes in a single year in the U.S. In the event of a crash, you could be facing serious losses including medical bills, damage to your motorcycle, damage to other vehicles, or costs of injuries of others involved in the crash. You never want to be stuck without adequate insurance in these situations. There are many types of coverage available and an experienced insurance agent can help you choose the right one for you.
