Out for a Springtime Drive? Be Prepared

Winter driving gets a bad rap, and with good reason. Icy roads and decreased visibility are nothing to mess with, but December to February aren’t the only months that warrant extra care and consideration on the roadway. As springtime rolls around, it brings with it a whole host of new driving topics to think about before you hit the roads for spring break road trips or your regular daily drive.

Here’s a look at what you need to be aware of before going forward.

Prepare Your Car: After a long and messy winter, one of the first tasks you’ll want to take care of this spring is getting your vehicle road ready. This includes routine maintenance like checking your tire pressure, fluid levels, brakes and suspension system. If necessary, do this with a certified mechanic.

Expect More Neighbors: While cars and trucks may rule the road, there are others you should be aware about on the highways which will begin to pop up more now that the weather is getting warmer.

  • Motorcycles: Many riders will hop on their Harley’s in spring to feel the flow of the wind through their hair. Keep an eye out for these more vulnerable vehicles at intersections, and be aware of your blind spots (and theirs) when passing them on the roadway.
  • Bicycles: Especially on smaller residential roads, be aware that this is the prime season for bicyclists. They share the road with you, and have the same rights as motorized vehicles. Pass only when it is safe to do so and be glad that they are out getting a little fresh air and exercise.
  • Pedestrians: Your neighbors out for a jog or that friendly couple with the dog will be more common occurrences on your drives each day. Be prepared to stop with little notice, especially when you are traveling in recreational, shopping, or residential areas.
  • Furry Friends: In addition to other people on the road, be aware that this is one of the biggest times for animals to be out and about. A deer could destroy your vehicle, and you don’t exactly want to massacre a family of rabbits, do you? Be aware of wildlife in your area and be prepared to stop or slow down to let them pass without harming them or you.

Be Weather Wary: March coming in like a lion, April showers, and much more. Be prepared to fend off flash floods and other extreme weather circumstances as the spring storms blow into position. And early in the spring, winter has the tendency to still rear its ugly head. If temperatures unexpectedly drop below freezing, employ your winter weather expertise to go slowly on slick and slippery roadways. If you do get caught in a spring (or winter) storm, know where you will be able to park and wait it out until the skies become more welcoming to fast moving vehicles.

For all of the above circumstances, it always pays to be prepared. One of the best ways you can protect yourself and your vehicle against unforeseen issues is to be armed with the best auto insurance out there. For a free quote from us at Berliner Gelfand, call us today at 203-367-7704.
